Allergic to School?

For children with allergies, school itself - also can bring an array of symptoms, such as sneezing, runny nose, itchy eyes, headaches and hives.

Approximately 6 million children in the United States have asthma.

Allergic rhinitis is the cause of more than 10,000 absences each school day, according to the National Institute of Health.

Just, think about all the schools that have mold problems across the U.S.A. What if there was one product that could combat the mold/mildew issues and help relieve the kids of America from allergys and asthma problems they face while they are in school for an average six (6.6) hours a day.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR:

School work is usually hindered when a child suffers from these various allergy symptoms:

The physical symptoms of allergies can affect the child's:

  • learning ability
  • concentration
  • performance
  • alertness
  • attendance
They can also cause your child to feel:

  • embarrassed
  • fatigued
  • irritable
  • moody
  • self-conscious
  • depressed
Behavior problems, such as the ones mentioned above, as well as temper tantrums, may manifest because the allergic child is unable to communicate what he/she is feeling.

This is known as "allergic irritability syndrome".

 Helpful Tips!

Ask questions. Don't jump to conclusions."

Talk to the teacher, the school nurse and, if necessary, the food service people. Inform them of your child's allergies. Discuss any conditions that might be a problem, and try to work out solutions. If your child has never had allergies before and suddenly comes home from school with symptoms. Find out what he or she was doing just before the reactions occurred. If it's not a cold, it's probably allergies - especially if someone else in the family has them.

When parents of children with asthma start getting school supplies together this time of the year, they need to add another item to the list: an asthma action plan. An asthma action plan is written with the help of the child's doctor, and includes the child's asthma triggers, asthma early warning signs and what to do in an emergency.

Asthma triggers vary by person, but can include exercise, molds and pollens, perfume, cologne and strong odors, and cold air. Other asthma triggers that aren't so obvious include byproducts of new construction, such as dust, and strong odors from new carpeting, flooring and other building materials. Kids know when they aren't feeling well. Encourage the child to be proactive.

How Can the Teacher Help?
A child's allergies may be influenced by classroom environmental factors, such as open windows in the fall, or the presence of dust mites. There are steps a teacher can take to help reduce allergens in the classroom:

  • Keep windows closed
  • Make sure dust does not accumulate
  • Rid the classroom of possible allergy triggers
  • Place children with allergies as far from the chalk board as possible to avoid irritation from chalk dust
  • Choose class pets with the allergic child in mind
  • Choose crafts that don't use known allergens.
Potential School Allergens
The common allergens to be aware of in the school environment are very similar to the ones found at home.

Common Symptoms
The child may suffer from a wide range of symptoms. The teacher should notate and report to the parents any noticeable changes in the child's symptoms or behavior.

  • dark circles under eyes
  • diarrhea
